![]() This technical stuff is all well and good but you just know there are not enough parts for your awesome creature. since we're here, this and other commands listed later can be used in other editors. Now I will admit, I don't need this much for creature creation but for anyone that wants to be good at the civilian editor, this works wonders on those parts that would look good if you could just flip it around. It's also useful for rotating feet see the plant monster example in the "Creative Uses" section. So remember to press TAB when the ball fails to meet your needs. The ball is imprecise but good for small adjustments and beginners, but for people who want to do more, they quickly find themselves frustrated by the lack of precision. This gives you much more control than the ball. ![]() Well what you probably didn't know was if you press TAB on your keyboard, you will lose that ball part handle and gain two more rotation handle one for each axis. I'm not sure how the community features will supplement that, though.Įric Neigher: Gotta catch 'em all! Good advice for Pokemon, bad advice for STDs.So by now you should know how to place parts on your creature but have you ever put on a part that, if rotated right, will look cool but for some reason the part handles won't rotate your piece right? As-is, Maxis is taking an almost Pokemon-like collectible tack with their "collect them all" attitude toward unlocking all the various Spore creatures you can play as (which fall into the distinct tank/healer/damage-dealer roles of many modern RPG protagonists). Ryan Scott: The developers have been pretty vague thus far about what the community features entail, although I'd say it's reasonable to expect some big announcement at some point prior to Darkspore's release. And, speaking of hacks and other customizations, what about the community? Will it feature custom maps/creatures/whatever, like Spore? Are people sharing content dynamically? Unless you're like that one contestant who gamed Press Your Luck in 1984 and took 45 consecutive turns without stopping.Įric Neigher: That's very cool - and I think it may lead to some players implementing some hacks to get the best of both worlds. So it's got this high-risk, high-reward kind of thing going on. Or, alternatively, you can bank your earnings and reset the difficulty dial. Basically, when you complete a level, you can choose to tackle more and more successive levels with the difficulty and loot accumulating steadily, at the risk of losing your entire haul if you fail. Ryan Scott: The world's not randomly assembled - it includes a predetermined set of planets that the game throws at you - but you advance according to a system that reminds me of the old TV game show Press Your Luck. What about the game world? Is it a series of random dungeons, or what? So, all the Spore Creature Creator fanatics will have something to tinker with.Įric Neigher: Hmmmm, cosmetic loot doesn't sound so interesting to me. You can also collect a lot of cosmetic loot that doesn't affect the numbers it's just to make you look cooler. ![]() Like I said, you acquire new limbs and such to attach to your creatures (you control three Spore-guys, and can seamlessly swap between any of them at any time), and these appendages affect your stats. What I'm getting at is that it's definitely in that vein - you left-click on lots of stuff, you use some special abilities, and you get loot, in a sense. Ryan Scott: Darkspore wears its Diablo influence on its sleeve. Anyway, my understanding is that you have a kind of Frankenstein approach to your alter-ego(s), then? Body parts instead of equipment? And how's the gameplay shaping up - is it a left-mouse-button clickfest, or more like a Zelda or Metroid? No ye olde fantasy loot here!Įric Neigher: Sorry, my emotion chip was malfunctioning. And yeah, you get parts to stick on your dudes that make them badder-ass. Point is, the galaxy needs saving, so off your crazy creatures go to click stuff to death (and I mean that in a good way). ![]() Then one of the creators went rogue and created some evil DNA called Darkspore. So, yes, it's a sci-fi setting - some epic DNA overlords created some badass DNA that evolved into the Spore creatures that you play. Ryan Scott: Wow, thanks for the scientific rundown, Data. Which of those genres will be involved here? I assume the RPG elements mean you actually alter the genotype, abilities, and phenotype of your alter-ego, yes? So, instead of that new +5 Sword of Whacking, you get some new DNA or something? And is it a sci-fi setting, or fantasy, or inside the human body, or what? Interesting, especially seeing as how Spore was a whole bunch of different game genres rolled into one. Eric Neigher: Sounds like a strange sort of hybrid. ![]()
